Orphan

Orphan

The only real innovation here is that child endangerment is funny/thrilling and not tedious as long as it's technically kids doing it to each other. Beyond that this is a classic domestic psychodrama, with such baroque emotional architecture it demands this pair of overqualified female lead performances. I also like that Peter Sarsgaard, who in my mind is permanently the dry, skeptical Chuck Lane from Shattered Glass, has been cast as the most clueless oaf patriarch in the history of the horror genre.
