Thinking of the best documentary Oscar nominees that I’ve seen : American Factory is illuminating and prickly in all the right ways, yet Edge of Democracy is the film that truly seems to leap into the political and social vortex of a society. It is a film about modern-day Brazilian politics, yet also a personal memoir from a director who has lived and felt the impact of these events. The fact that Democracy’s narrator quotes from Julius Caesar is not merely interesting. It points to the thread of Shakespearean tragedy that runs straight to the heart of this film and this story.
