Certain Women ★★★★

Kelly Reichardt crafts a film full of quiet moments of everyday life as four strong women struggle to make their mark on the world dealing with opposition of their male counterparts, all set against the beautiful backdrop of the open plains of the American Midwest. The performances are stellar from the entire cast, but the leading ladies are really given the space to shine. The film is never showy of it's gorgeous scenery, instead most of the shots take place on overcast days or rainy nights and the lack of a musical score, allows the sounds of the environment (from natural sounds of the wind, babbling steams, to more made made noises like a night time train, the rattling of an old truck, or clanking silverware at the diner) to give that "of the moment" feeling as we share a a glimpse of time in the lives of these women.
