ok, new favourite film of 2020.
absolutely fantastic film. it just constantly and effortlessly rides that line between really heartbreaking and absolutely beautiful.
riz ahmed is just outstanding in this movie. like, there’s been a lot of great leading performances this year, but this one has to take that top spot - there’s just so many dimensions to this role and this character and this performance that any really competent actor could have easily missed out on, but ahmed just hits those notes at every single turn.
before watching this, i saw people saying ‘sound of metal is a lock for best sound design’ but, like, seriously, i really do hope that is the case, because this film is host to some of the best sound design i’ve ever experienced, seriously.
it’s just this really warm and powerful and challenging and gritty and real exploitation of acceptance and healing and making peace with oneself, plus it’s got a really gorgeous ending too, so, yeah. please do yourself a favour and watch this film. you will not regret it.
