RotJ is a bit of a mixed bag for me because the parts I’m not a huge fan of aren’t because they don’t work narratively, but because they lean more towards tonal inconsistency and poor direction. Richard Marquand is easily my least favorite director of the whole series; he seems uncomfortable with Star Wars, settling with a more childish tone which doesn’t work at all following the darkness of Empire. Never really liked the Jabba subplot all that much, so it takes a bit to kick into gear for me. Ewoks are hella cute and we LOVE to see indigenous people kick some colonist ass. The Luke/Vader/Emperor parts are a little repetitive dialogue-wise, but it’s still so satisfying with Vader’s redemption and the father-son resolution. This will probably remain my least favorite trilogy conclusion once TRoS is out, but it’s still some pretty good stuff!
