    La Haine gets everything right. A timeless display of comraderie, power, class, and civil unrest tied to the endless spiral of poverty, this film's message remains ubiquitous throughout contemporary culture.

    While set up from the very first sequence as an inevitable powder keg, Kassovitz is able to sprinkle in dialogue and relatability that allows for the viewer to completely forget about the constant threat of catastrophe.

    Ultimately, La Haine is a masterclass in presenting the stark differences in a unflinchingly stacked social structure that inevitably leads to violence and retaliation.

    If the characters in a film ask each other if they are happy enough times, I WILL cry. There is no way around this cheap trick eliciting an emotional response from me. Additionally, I'm a sucker for a film that's a bit didactic.

    With that said, 20th Century Women is heartfelt and charming. Annette Bening was an absolute treat and I will never not love Greta Gerwig being Greta Gerwig. The soundtrack was solid even if all of the punk…
