I’ve never had a more visceral reaction to anything in any movie than I did during the prolonged heroin injection scene. that was terrifying, disgusting, and kinda necessary given this story and the style they actualized it in. the processing/packaging scene was mesmerizing. the entire film brings to life the thick coat of NYC grime permeating through every shot. the feelings of euphoria and daze they probably felt each time shooting isn’t really conveyed through any slick, stylish sequences. but the effects are right there, and they’re shown unvarnished. the escape is just as bleak, if not more so, than the environment itself. the ending isn’t happy, nor is it overly sad, but it is stark. there’s a good chance that, despite each of them reaching new respective depths, and coming out on the other side relatively unscathed, we know exactly where they’ll go, and what they’ll do next. and that is where the power of its conclusion lies.
