Before Midnight

Before Midnight ★★★★½

I must confess I haven’t seen the previous two films of this trilogy, but Before Midnight is certainly a very touching and enthralling romance from Richard Linklater. Even if you are not familiar with the story of Jesse and Celine like I wasn’t, you get an overview of their past experiences and personality traits in conversations, arguments and moments of nostalgia from the couple. Now the strength of this film relies on how realistic the dialogues are. They just seem so raw and spontaneous, making you really connect to these people. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy have great chemistry together and give very powerful performances here. I was surprised by how this managed to be quite funny at times, but devastating and emotional as well. Before Midnight deserves all the praise it’s been getting by both audiences and critics, being one of the best films of the year.
