Maybe it's because I'm a parent, so I'm a little more fluent in toddler speak...but the kid says, "Jeepers. I'm ALL furry!" not "I'm A furry", come on people. Although, I will admit...the other way is funnier...

2/5 for the animation and nostalgia alone. Loved this cheesy movie as a kid.

Goddammit. If you told me a year ago that I'd watch a movie where one minute I'm falling over laughing from hotdog hands and butt plug trophies, then bawling my eyes out the next...I'd have thought you were crazier than this movie...but jeez is it a 5/5...

If this movie came out in 2015 when I was a teenager? 10 out 5 stars, I'd love it. BEST MOVIE EVER.

2021 though? It feels a little dated. The first half hour or so had me expecting a Promising Young Woman-esque deconstruction and subversion of action movie tropes; maybe some commentary on the toxic masculine behaviors that seemingly everyone in Hutch's life thinks that he should adhere to. But then, any hope of that falls away as it hits…

Mainly the 2 stars are there cause the premise of an alien species coming to earth, doing a colonialism to humans while thinking they are doing a good thing is intriguing to me...especially for a kids movie.

Otherwise, the characters are fairly annoying, not one joke is funny, the soundtrack is tacky, and the pacing is off.

I think what I love about this movie is that besides the love letter to 1950s flying saucer Sci-fi, besides the amazing cast, besides the over the top campiness...at its core it is basically: what if Gremlins, but Martians?

And you can't ask for more than that.

    1) I think for an villain-protagonist to work, they need to at least have some type of sympathetic character traits or background. Similar to the show You, if you make the main character so utterly unlikable, the viewer just wants to see them get their comeuppance. For a villain-protagonist narrative to work, I think the viewer needs to be in conflict on some level: Dexter kills bad people, most of the time people much worse than him (although Dexter is…

3/5 for how gorgeous the film is.

0/5 cause my dude really let Toyko get flooded so he can see his teenage crush. I'm half suspecting he only left home cause his parents made him clean his room or something...
