Godzilla

Godzilla ★★★★

For all the movie's genuine issues of pacing and casting (Aaron Taylor Johnson is a plague upon the good people of the earth) it also features some of the only CGI of the last ten years that I would describe as "uncanny" and "beautiful". The deserted Japanese town, the juxtaposition of these creatures to human scale, the sheer indifference of nature to humanity, it is genuinely poetic eye protein the likes of which you don't get in modern tentpole filmmaking.

The much maligned MUTOS, not to mention the title attraction himself have weight and soul, in retrospect I find the audience trolling hilarious and the final duel is exquisitely brutal.
