Brooklyn ★★★★

I enjoyed this slice of 1950s Brooklyn life. I think it captured well the difficulties of emigration/immigration, and the way that leaving one place and trying to fit in to another can leave you in limbo, unable to feel completely at home in either place.

Great performances, particularly from Saoirse Ronan, who convincingly captured the way that Eilis went from nervousness and crushing homesickness to growing confidence as she settled into her new life. Jane Brennan's performance as Eilis's mother was also rather lovely and subtle. Parts of the film are a bit one-dimensional, but overall, I enjoyed it.
