Ben’s review published on Letterboxd:
Pure, unadulterated schlock. What more would you expect from a Larry Cohen written and produced film? Nothing really grabbed hold of me until the insane police station massacre. That’s where things went from meh to now we’re getting somewhere. I’m still not sold on my overall enjoyment, but I did have a lot of fun during the finale even if the resolution, or lack thereof, was weak. The performances make up for where the story lacks. I mean Tom Atkins rules and makes everything he’s in at least watchable. Of all the 80s horror movies, I’m surprised this spawned a few sequels. I’m anxious to check them out because Robert Z’Dar looks rather intimidating. Maniac Cop is a by the numbers affair that relies heavily on its players to make it worthwhile.
