    Bad Day at Black Rock

I was trying to figure out the genre before watching, but it seemed unclear. Is it a western, or a film noir? A duckduckgo search led nowhere; because, as it turns out, it's both.

In retrospect, The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day at Black Rock would have been a better title. That's how bad the day was!

    "Anybody order fried sauerkraut?"

I'm really tuning in to Leo's performance in each re-watch. It's not easy to act badly on purpose, and to do it subtly is very impressive. It's equally amazing how he modulates his behavior based on who he's interacting with. Plus, I've heard he came up with and improvised a lot of the "actor forgetting his lines" scene. Top notch, I tell you.

I'm still amazed that a three-hour movie can pass so effortlessly.

    Requiem for a Dream

The title says it all: You know from the first moment that things aren't going to turn out well; but you can't help but stare, horrified, once things get moving. Requiem is filled to the brim with technical creativity, and every bit of style supports the substance. Still, with so much going on, it's easy to overlook the stunning performances led by Ellen Burstyn (in her Oscar nominated role). I know Requiem is on a lot of "Great Films I'll Never Watch Again" lists, but you owe it to yourself to see it at least the once.
