    The Kindergarten Teacher


    Beautiful performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Thanks largely to her, the film was saturated with layers of nuance. You just sympathized with and felt ashamed for her character simultaneously. In this internet age, the themes spoke to me. It was uncomfortable, but not so much that it was painful to watch. You could feel the feminine perspective imbued in each scene -- powerful stuff. I was very impressed.

    On some levels, it was brilliant; but every strength was also a weakness. Both overly long and enthralling, the length made the struggle to reach the moon feel tactile. However, I could also feel my muscles hardening in my seat. Is this what the astronauts felt like in their module? I was dying.

    The title says it all: You know from the first moment that things aren't going to turn out well; but you can't help but stare, horrified, once things get moving. Requiem is filled to the brim with technical creativity, and every bit of style supports the substance. Still, with so much going on, it's easy to overlook the stunning performances led by Ellen Burstyn (in her Oscar nominated role). I know Requiem is on a lot of "Great Films I'll Never Watch Again" lists, but you owe it to yourself to see it at least the once.
