Matthew’s Journey into The Unloved: Part 93

Scout opens with his video-essay thusly, “I had almost forgotten what it felt like to be completely surprised by a horror film. Horror is my genre, the first thing with which I truly fell in love… Eventually, you grow to love the things in the dark, of indeterminate but certainly awful shape, of dreadful character, of unceasing momentum, of all things out to upset you and live in your imagination forever.”

A monolithic, mythical experience that manipulates, hypnotizes, and transforms the viewer and transformed cinema at large.

There is no going back. This is the apex, the ultimate, the supreme being. There hasn’t been nor will there ever be another film like Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey

A film that lives up to the hype, though some would have you believe otherwise. Sure, they’re entitled to their opinion, of course, but I think if you truly believe in the transcendental power…

Lean, mean, and efficient. An interesting war movie because so much of it takes place off the battlefield and in elegant rooms, where well-dressed men decide the fate of thousands. It tells the story of how men use war to inflate their egos, sending young men to die for the impossible so they can earn a piece of metal fashioned into a pretty shape, and needlessly killing others to cover their own assess when they fail to achieve such lofty goals. I love Apocalypse Now, it’s really an important film to me, but there’s something classical and graceful about Paths of Glory that gives it the edge.

The loud, incandescent noises of a bustling city drowning out the quiet, familiar sounds of home.
