Jojo Rabbit ★★★½

I’ve finally seen all the Best Picture nominations!

Jojo Rabbit doesn’t do anything new with its material, but it’s executed fairly well.

The cast is fantastic, with minor exceptions. Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlet Johansson, Taika Waititi, and Archie Yates are all great in their respective roles!

Now onto the subject matter, which can be diluted into one quote:

Fuck off Hitler!

or by way of Dead Kennedys,

The film treats Nazis as bumbling and incompetent fools, and rarely showcases just how monstrous and cruel they were. It’s wonderfully showcased by a pair of shoes, but that was about it. A film like BlacKkKlansman does this well, it expertly balances the absurd with the reality.

If they just toned down the absurdity and increased the reality, then it would’ve made the whole film more impactful. That way when they showcase the absolute atrocities committed by the Nazis, it feels less tonally confusing.

Waititi’s humor is distinct and works for the majority of the time. And everything else is just fine. Which really brings the film down. It’s exceptional in a few areas and doesn’t manage to achieve anything more than average in others.

It’s not a terrible movie, but its commentary and satire of hate isn’t that great either. It’s a fine film. That’s about it.

Extra points for exquisite use of “Heroes” by Bowie!
