Weird how so much of comedy relies on agreeing with (or at least begrudgingly acknowledging) the points being made. Clever full-circle moments and witticisms can’t entirely make up for a lack of relatability, in my opinion. I like Chapelle enough, I think he’s a really entertaining guy who knows how to command an audience with his swagger.
In this special, though, I could not find 100% common ground, which does detract from the overall experience. I’m glad that people’s thoughts are flowing freely and that Chapelle’s criticism of cancel culture has sort of made him immune to the process in the public eye, but this just didn’t have all of my favorite talking points nor the hard hitting reality punches I’ve come to appreciate.
