"Gimme the goddamn kitty cat bracelet, motherfucker!"

I've apparently seen Bob Odenkirk in a number of things, but I don't recall him in any of them. I know he's the lead in Better Call Saul, but I've never seen it as I hated what little I've seen of Breaking Bad. My point is: I wasn't looking for an action movie with him as the lead and while the trailer looked pretty good, I wasn't entirely sold on it, especially when…

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

"You have one choice, boy: sex or the saw. Sex is, well... Nobody knows. But the saw... The saw is family."

Every time I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 before today I was blinded by the romantic comedy aspects of the film and the relationship issues that our young couple faced. It kept me from appreciating the other themes of the film, such as family and the lengths that the small businessman needs to go to in order to…

    Universal Soldier: Regeneration

"I just remembered what I wanted to tell you. Wait a sec..."

Regeneration feels like an action movie from the Eastern Bloc. It's so cold and regimented. There's no room for humor or the ridiculous catchphrases of the American action film. This is serious as a heart attack and it's pretty damn glorious. My only question, and I know that I skipped three films, is how the hell is Dolph Lundgren's character still running around when the last I saw of him he was being run through a thresher and being made into coleslaw?

    Universal Soldier

"They swam a mile and a half in four minutes?"
    "They're eight seconds behind schedule."

I hated Universal Soldier the first time I saw it, but I wasn't a fan of Dolph Lundgren at the time and only a tad bit more of a fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme. I've been watching more of Van Damme's filmography of late and finding some of his stuff to be pretty fun, even if the story's completely implausible. My second viewing of Universal Soldier is like that. It's complete nonsense, but it's enjoyable nonsense. The fights are good and it's the best I've ever seen Dolph.

"Why you pursue something is as important as what you pursue."

Jake Gyllenhaal is creepiness personified in the character of Louis Bloom. He shares a number of personality traits with a certain Travis Bickle, but Lou learns fast. He does the research. He knows just enough to make himself very dangerous. To the people he works with. To the people he films. And to anyone who might get in the way of him getting his story. Even the story is…

Exactly what I expected from it. Exactly what I wanted from it. Exactly as it should be.
