    "You're in over your head."
"Maybe. But this is how I'll catch my killer."
"I'm not going to confess all my secrets just because I have an orgasm. You won't learn anything I don't want you to know."
"Yes, I will. Then I'll nail you."
"Nah. You'll just fall in love with me."
"I'm in love with you already. But I'll nail you anyway. You can put that in your book."

I was still living in Brazil in 1992 when…

    Death Proof

"There are few things as fetching as a bruised ego on a beautiful angel."

Death Proof is many things - a love letter to the classic car films of the '70s, a tribute to Kurt Russell, a fun attempt at making Tarantino's very own grindhouse flick - but first and foremost, it's a slasher film.

Yes, QT takes his time getting to know the victims, giving them some tasty dialogue to chew on as well as thoughts and feelings. They're…

"People don't change. A decent man remains a decent man and..."
"A girl remains a slut? Maybe you're right, Doctor. Than I pity you. You'll always represent what's most dismal and most alien in life."
    "An idiot?"
    "No. A bourgeois."

Still an absolutely fascinating film. Even more so now that I've learned that it was based on real events in the town of Tulle in Southern France between 1917 and 1922.

"Hey, don't drink that poison! That's $4.00 an ounce!"

My wife and I needed a bit of time away from the news to decompress so we figured a Marx Brothers film would be good. It turned out to not be one that I'd seen before, but I'm still not actually sure which I have seen. It was decent, but the blackface scene spoiled the good mood.

"Why you pursue something is as important as what you pursue."

Jake Gyllenhaal is creepiness personified in the character of Louis Bloom. He shares a number of personality traits with a certain Travis Bickle, but Lou learns fast. He does the research. He knows just enough to make himself very dangerous. To the people he works with. To the people he films. And to anyone who might get in the way of him getting his story. Even the story is…

  • Foxcatcher

I almost turned this off in the first 20 minutes as I have absolutely no interest in wrestling and couldn't relate to Mark at all. I stuck with it though and was somewhat surprised about how much I ended up (I don't know if, "enjoying," is really the right word, but for lack of a better one...) enjoying Foxcatcher.

Mark Ruffalo was, as usual, great as the doomed Dave Schultz, the moral center of the film. He's just a simple…
