    Hmmm. Watched on the back of the two other Ozon films on Mubi this month, 5X2 and Under the Sand. Hard to think it was made the same year as the latter. This one is really not of a piece with those at all. Its a sex farce, basically, which isn't without its moments. If you like a sex farce then this will press your buttons. Otherwise, I'd pass.

    This was really not what I was expecting. And I struggled at first, and to be truthful, its one I have enjoyed more thinking back to it, mulling it, than I might have done at the time. And I'm not sure I'd watch it again. But its really interesting. It has a really big reputation in film history I guess and so its definitely worth seeing. It reminded me of a Robbe-Grillet novel I read once. Quite dated now, but…

    I have to admit, I could not get on with this at all. I like gnomic, pretentious French films as much as the next person, but I found this entirely inaccessible and unsympathetic. So, you know, not a lot to say.

    Essentially, its a series of wordless, or near wordless sequences set to music of our protagonists acting out a love affair. Defenders will call it a visual poem or similar I guess. Abstract mood. But as I say, I found no way in.

    I first watched this film about 20 years ago and was really excited when it came up on Mubi. Having re-watched it, its not quite the film I remember (I had remembered the wrong character dying) but probably a better one overall.

    The film was made in the nineties but uses the seventies to make points about contemporary America at the time, I guess, in a ways that are both quite searching, but also, with hindsight, I think quite complacent.…
