A precise heist and one of the most heart-pounding final acts I have seen in some time, but conversely with most other reviews I have read I found the first quarter dragging.
I read in the production notes from Dassin himself that he later regretted the cabaret number explaining the title; customary of 1940s and 50s film noir, but unnecessary here. The source material being as racially and sexually brutal as it was, I think this adaption elevates it as much as possible, but still the women shrink.
Exceptional, all the same. Fin.
