ButtNugget’s review published on Letterboxd:
Bong Joon-ho is not one for subtlety these days. His last two movies were just full of heavy-handedness that didn’t gel with me. For his latest, he returns from Hollywood to satirize South Korea’s ever-stratifying society. It’s not the freshest idea around, and the message is clear from the title alone. But what the director lacks in nuance, he makes up for in hysterical B-movie hijinks and pulpy pageantry. The film adeptly blends dark comedy with horror. And the characters, with their quirks and all, are so much fun. Near the end, however, the film kind of resorted to some stale genre mechanics. Regardless, I think no one can deny that this is Bong’s most interesting work since Mother.
