What an uncharacteristically accessible work by Harmony Korine standards. This might now be my favorite of his stuff, actually. There’s a lyrical aspect to the film’s display of decadence and degeneracy that clicks for me big time. It has a simple, uncomplicated plot that often veers into the nonsensical, and yet I couldn’t help but smile throughout it all. It helps that Matthew McConaughey is in full-on “I’m acting!” mode, keeping my attention from the start. Moondog is Panglossian self-destruction in the flesh. He’s Hunter S. Thompson without the fear and loathing.
