Brutal. Unlike most revenge movies, where the bad guys get their comeuppance and balance is restored and you can have a nice dinner afterward, this one left me with a sense of palpable unease. I think that might be the intended effect, given the theme of black people and women being subjugated by white men, which still hasn’t exactly been resolved in a satisfying and symmetrical way 200 years after the movie is set. This is a very good film, but some scenes are almost unbearable to watch.
An entertaining and sometimes surprising look at the MPAA and their age-old, insanely secretive movie ratings process. I basically knew what to expect, but the amount of homophobia, misogyny, and blatant religious influence involved in assigning an NC-17 or R rating was pretty shocking. I loved the split-screen comparisons. Must-see for film fans.
