    The Nightingale

Brutal. Unlike most revenge movies, where the bad guys get their comeuppance and balance is restored and you can have a nice dinner afterward, this one left me with a sense of palpable unease. I think that might be the intended effect, given the theme of black people and women being subjugated by white men, which still hasn’t exactly been resolved in a satisfying and symmetrical way 200 years after the movie is set. This is a very good film, but some scenes are almost unbearable to watch.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

I’m so happy to say this movie addresses every shortcoming of the first one. It’s imaginative, perfectly choreographed, not annoying, and produced with the same sharpness that went into the original songs. But best of all, the cast members who can’t sing, don’t!

Sort of a one-joke movie but it’s a great joke: Vampires are just like the rest of us except they’re undead. It’s like The Office in a flat full of monsters. Now leave me to do my dark bidding on the Internet!

An entertaining and sometimes surprising look at the MPAA and their age-old, insanely secretive movie ratings process. I basically knew what to expect, but the amount of homophobia, misogyny, and blatant religious influence involved in assigning an NC-17 or R rating was pretty shocking. I loved the split-screen comparisons. Must-see for film fans.
