It’s tempting to say that there’s a good movie somewhere inside Sexy Beast. However, it’s awkwardly paced and its characters are poorly motivated. There are a couple directorial/stylistic choices that I think are admirable in their boldness, but they pay no dividends in emotional resonance and come off as weird for the sake of weird. It doesn’t match the rest of the film, and that incongruity is bad, especially when it’s a film’s closing image.
It’s a movie that poses an interesting question: what happens to those gangsters from other movies after they retire with all that dough? That’s a good premise that could yield a good film. Unfortunately, I don’t think Sexy Beast delivers.
