The Black Room

The Black Room ★★★½

Fun little… Thriller? Gothic drama? Horror? Not quite sure how to classify this one but whatever it is, I had a good time with it!

Boris Karloff plays dual roles and the best scenes in the film are when he’s acting against himself. It’s a good reminder of how talented an actor he was too, giving each of the roles distinct personalities without resorting to pure stereotypes. He manages to ground each of them in some humanity.

Unfortunately there aren’t enough scenes including the two Boris’s and too much time is devoted to a ham fisted love story between two bland, young characters that even the actors themselves don’t seem terribly interested in.

Overall though, it’s a great showcase for Karloff’s acting talents and has some terrific gothic imagery and sets.
