I would generally rate a student film with a preferential treatment anyway — I would not log one that I think would discourage someone. But I think Scorsese will make it. Fascinating to see his ideas developing and smartly drawn, maybe more from the classics, than later as an insistence upon his own developed formulas. It’s just fine and begins writing some checks for Scorsese to cash, but is also pretty rudimentary, rote narration, at least foreshadowing interesting ideas he would later have.
