Fittingly moody and understated starting point for Nichols, with some dynamic Michael Shannon work as expected, altogether strong as expected though I guess I was left wanting a bit more, it has flashes rather than sustained sequences of greatness but it's pretty good overall.

Beautiful road trip movie and examination of motherhood, Kore-eda occasionally falls into a few lesser notes with the plot directions and messaging but the strength and beauty of its emotional core and drive is enough to make me overlook them. Every character interaction between the central dynamic is a gem. Your heart will ache but you also just end up loving the time you spend with them. Song Kang-ho gives one of his best performances built on so many small and beautifully observed moments, and IU is simply mesmerising (I expect her to be a critics’ fave). Everyone is great.

The worst Benedict Cumberbatch film of the year but also probably the best Tom Holland film of the year I guess. Some good acting and genuinely effective playing around with ideas. Some awful meme moments and poorly executed direction undercuts it. Audience responded really well to what you’d expect them to react well too, I didn’t care for a lot of it but some moments did.

Anyway, The Hand of God is out on Netflix today.

What an absolute blast. Loved the fusion of Asian and Asian American cultures, the vibrant fun of the varied action sequences, and the immense heart to what is essentially the tale of a broken family finding ways to repair itself. Probably the most use of flashbacks in any MCU film and I thought they worked a treat. Humour mostly worked really well, with a certain someone making a very welcome return. Visual effects bit hit and miss in…
