a genuine achievement in setting, composition and choreography, even from someone who doesn't particularly like musicals. i'm mostly unfamiliar with the original versions, and frankly don't care too much about this story, but the shakespearean framework is timeless enough to sustain an engaging narrative. spielberg still has it.

cinema has prevailed. a step up from the original in every department, playing with the nostalgia but pushing above and beyond it, ultimately modernizing the framework of the classic.

genuine moments of awe abound. the action is far more comprehensible and gripping, tense and exciting in a way 86' couldn't have been. more than anything, there's a solid, impactful emotional core that elevates the dogfights by making you care. cruise and teller are compelling together, the supporting cast is charming, and the iceman cameo is rly sweet. i also appreciated the tony scott tribute.

alongside creed, one of the best legacy sequels put to screen.

wasn't nearly awake enough to fully experience this on my first watch, so needless to say i pretty much love this movie now.

beyond all the obvious iconic features ingrained in pop culture, the matrix is also supremely effective in it's look, storytelling and action. neo-gothic y2k sounds pretty cringe on paper but it works wonderfully in spite of any pre-requisite cheesiness. the plot also plays out so smoothly, a kind of trail of breadcrumbs being carefully left behind in…
