jesus. not the most enjoyable film from kurosawa but certainly the most harrowing and unforgiving. the rich, vivid visuals soon give way to scenes of brutal destruction. the siege sequence, void of noise except for the unnerving score really impressed me, as did the scale and vitality of every battle. gone are kurosawa's plucky days; this is pure nihilism.
