Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

    ★★★★

James Gunn for the most part resists the compulsion to grab at other parts of the Marvel universe and deflatingly infuse them in the story or try to set up another franchise spin-off and purely focuses on the Guardians, their story and telling an emotionally resonant galactic epic with some killer tracks. This is undoubtedly the best film Marvel has given us since Captain America Winter Soldier in my mind and concludes a spectacular trilogy which would be better without…

    Sisu

    ★★★

A totally unpretentious thrill ride which never dares to be more than its claim. To list a few more apt adjectives, "ridiculous", "uninventive", "brazen" but most importantly it is "Sisu". It just goes and never stops and it's a good time. That's the main thing I think and a couple dead Nazis along the way always cheers me up.

"Then worms shall try that long preserved virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust.
The grave's a fine and private place
But none, I think, do there embrace." - Moliere

It gives the flipside to the napalm soaked forests of Nam and shows the further hardships of when they returned home, some emblazoned with the decorations of war, others who lost pieces of their mind and more noticeably their body but there is an interesting perspective shown of the soldier…

  • The Northman

    The Northman

    ★★★★½

The Northman understands the intensity and ferocity of Viking age society while suckling off of the humour and hyperbolic folk-telling that so much of the mythology embraces. This film is equal in its savagery as it is its passion. Having consulted experts of the era such as Niel Price, it is brimming with historical head nods such as the minor details of the viking funeral detailed by Ibn Fadlan and the designs of the shields have been inspired by archaeological…
