    The Northman

    ★★★★½

The Northman understands the intensity and ferocity of Viking age society while suckling off of the humour and hyperbolic folk-telling that so much of the mythology embraces. This film is equal in its savagery as it is its passion. Having consulted experts of the era such as Niel Price, it is brimming with historical head nods such as the minor details of the viking funeral detailed by Ibn Fadlan and the designs of the shields have been inspired by archaeological…

    Jackass Forever

    ★★★★

This is such a perfectly timed film. When every film has gotta have some super serious and "nuanced" take on the world, the lads at Jackass got their dicks out and cause unspeakable pain to themselves for the sake of entertainment. Cooper Raif's sophomore project exudes the same real vulnerability that Shithouse did so well in executing. But instead Raif abandons a socially awkward college kid for a rambunctious drop out and yet they feel very similar in the pain they're conveying. It's that feeling when you're pretty sure what will make you happy and any major obstacle seems like a dread filled guillotine to your aspirations. But of course as the film emphasises, there is actually more than one soul…

    From Beyond

    ★★★

Stuart Gordan of Re-Animator fame teams up with Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton again for an exercise in gory carnage. As with many 80s horror films that wanted to show off their fancy new gore effects, From Beyond's practical effects are stunning hearkening back to The Thing, Evil Dead and his own previous film catalogue. Although cheesy at times, it creates a perverse atmosphere showcasing disturbing sexual acts while keeping a light tone. Not as comedic or polished as Re-Animator but is still creative and fun.
