Ash Vitus Raymer’s review published on Letterboxd:
Batman V Superman is a movie we have all been waiting for for years, is it worth that wait? Yes and no, I found this movie to be good overall but surprisingly disappointing considering well, the fact it's fucking Batman V Superman!
I'll state my case, as far as the bad goes the story structure in this movie is absolutely poor, the entire time it feels like it's rushing past character development and important plot points but doesn't know what it's rushing to, for a two and a half hour movie you would think it would take its time to focus on the old and new characters and their motivation to duke it out, which is something the movie does beautifully in its opening scene but fails to build upon the rest of the movie, leaving the final battle honestly feeling forces and unauthentic, it's more focused on setting up Justice League and random other bullshit that doesn't matter than being focused on giving us what we were sold on, a gladiator match between the two most iconic heroes of all time.
As far as my good goes though I have to say, with the exception of Eisenbergs Luthor who felt more like if Mark Zuckerberg became the Riddler, the characters otherwise are great! I still have tons of love for Cavill's Superman, I felt like he definitely could have benefited from having more of a character arc but nonetheless I still love him as the character and then we have our new arrivals who I left extremely excited to see more of, Gal Gadot really surprised me with how badass she was as Wonder Woman, with more to do I think Jeremy Irons Alfred could give Michael Caines a run for his money and then we come to the big one, Ben Afflecks Batman who I have already deemed the greatest cinematic Batman I have ever seen, I honest to god cant think of anyone who would have been more perfect for this role, this is the kind of cinematic Batman I have been waiting for, he perfectly encapsulates the character and I swear no one has ever looked that good in a batsuit ever before! It's funny and sad that I left the movie not excited about what I had just seen but what I was going to see later, that stand alone Batman movie can't come soon enough!
Batman V Superman is going to be a divisive movie just like "Man of Steel" before it but times ten, I know a lot of people are going to love it and a lot of people are going to hate it, I'm on neither spectrum, I'm right in the middle on this one, leaning towards the good just on Batfleck alone but I can't deny the fact I am disappointed with how this came out, I'm really curious to see how I feel after a second viewing, seeing it again Thursday night so only time will tell but as I stand now, this should have been so much better than it was.
