Doesn’t quite hold up like it used to.
First and foremost, Gyllenhaal's performance should earn him an Oscar nomination. Not a win, but a nom for sure. He was psychotically charismatic, owned the screen and out-shined the entire cast. The premise was unique and interesting, however I feel like it could've been executed better. I think that if iNightcrawler had a more visual director like Nic Winding Refn, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, etc, I think we could be talking Best Picture talk. Boyhood is easily in the 10 best of 2014. Obviously props are due to Linklater for creating an epic piece of art. However I don't feel as if its as ground-breaking as everyone claimed it was. Boyhood is an experience for sure and I was entertained throughout, I guess I just expected more from all the hype. Boyhood is a masterful film, but I still feel as if the Before Trilogy is Linklater's best work. Still one of the best of the year though and deserves a best pic, screenplay, directing, and maybe some acting nods from the Academy this year.
