A convoluted, but nevertheless engaging mystery/period spy thriller that delivers on double crosses and intrigue more than on chanbara action. Performances are solid all around and the film offers a pretty interesting view of Japanese culture and history. Overall, this one’s a bit of a gem,I’d say, even if it has been recognized by the Criterion Collection.
