Scorsese can make disgusting 1970’s New York look like something dreamy and beautiful. This movie is so haunting and the score is fantastic. I watched this in high school and didn’t really like it, but I realize now that I really didn’t understand it. Travis Bickle is an archetype for all disaffected young men, and it’s painful to watch his transformation into a “hero” of his own making. DeNiro is fantastic.
I never once looked at the running time, and at 3 hours and 20 minutes, that means something is going right. The Irishman is told in the same structure as Goodfellas, but in a much less bombastic way. De Niro is fantastic as a mob enforcer caught between two loyalties. Marty has made 5+ mob movies at this point and I could continue to watch more. Bravo to cinema!
The de-aging technology was distracting at first but I got used…
