There’s “aged poorly,” and then there’s “aged catastrophically.” This thing is radioactive. It’s celluloid Chernobyl. I almost canceled my Blu-ray player.

Fuller claims he shot this in 10 days. 10 days! It's a studio set, of course, but even so it should be impossible to shoot these controlled compositions, stark lighting setups, fractured hallucinations, or to even get these wild performances at breakneck speed. This is high quality American expressionism shot on a guerrilla mumblecore schedule. Fuller was the madman.

And yes, it is, "D-Cinemascore" my ass. This is an outstanding small slice of a post-apocalypse, showing how humans with good intentions and goodwill towards each other can still descend into paranoia and hatred OH WAIT you all lived through the pandemic, too. Prescient film, great digital cinematography, heartbreaking last act.

I have a story about Fred Williamson that I want to share, but first, my review of this movie, which, as others have mentioned, is available on Criterion Channel under the alternate title of The Legend of Black Charley. The short version is that I really liked this, mostly because Williamson is just great in the role, showing off those action chops that kept him steadily employed during this run. He plays a southern slave who kills his captor and…
