    Fuller claims he shot this in 10 days. 10 days! It's a studio set, of course, but even so it should be impossible to shoot these controlled compositions, stark lighting setups, fractured hallucinations, or to even get these wild performances at breakneck speed. This is high quality American expressionism shot on a guerrilla mumblecore schedule. Fuller was the madman.

    It's hilarious just how hapless the main character in The Challenge is. Scott Glenn plays him as a palooka fighter who can't even keep a sparring job but mysteriously scores a gig delivering a sword to Japan. He's kidnapped, searched, and just... flails helplessly at everybody until he finally decides to beg a sensei for some training.

    The most interesting relationship in the film is between Glenn and the sensei, played by a gloriously aged Toshiro Mifune, but their character…

    I watched the DVD of this, and it was a bad sign when the dummy hosted the menu screen and mocked me for my choices. I hated this dummy before the movie even started. Bold strategy, Cotton.
