Housebound ★★★½

Knew very little about this enjoyable debut from New Zealand when I sat down to watch it--it starts out with a sort-of-slapstick sequence involving two masked individuals attempting (and failing) to rob an ATM, and winds up a sort of vintage Hitchcock film filtered through early Peter Jackson sensibilities. The protagonist (Morgana O'Reilly) who's being forced to live with her mother under home detention is an interesting character, and the story's twists and turns are handled deftly and with a hint of morbid charm. Extra points for use of laundry hamper during a late-film confrontation.
