Unsettling. I went and took a walk outside after watching this to try and forget it. Then I came inside and started writing this. I wonder if the 15 years since Elephant’s release has added more weight to it.
This film asks for your patience. Possibly the best Van Sant I’ve seen (which is only 4). Spectacular use of time. Long takes are hypnotic. Old Hollywood aspect ratio WORKS. In this.
Really interesting to watch this for about the 10th time with a group that hadn’t seen it before. Seeing what parts they laugh at or respond to.
One thing that has stood out with almost EVERY time I watch this film with people that haven’t seen it, is the distaste for the ending. It’s not necessarily bad, but the sudden shift really throws people off.
