    In a negative review, the San Francisco Chronicle described Skate Kitchen as “just one meaningless scene after another.” This is true in the best of ways, as the film deftly skates through (see what I did there) the neo-realism genre, incorporating non-actors and offering a slice of life into a new world that is equal parts alien, familiar, and captivating.

    Sean Baker creates some of the most captivating characters I’ve ever seen. This little indy project had me riveted and completely invested. Don’t sleep on Starlet if you like Sean Baker - I liked this even more than Tangerine and can’t wait to watch it again.
