What an ensemble! Unfortunately that means not enough Dietrich.
von Sternberg again has a hard time making the surface level plot work with the greater complexities of Dietrich’s character and his own ideas of faith, love, and country (although far more successful on this front than with Dishonored). Similar to Carax with Mauvais Sang (a love story AND a heist film?!). Although perhaps I’m being too hard on him?
