    The Pale Blue Eye

The Pale Blue Eye is really promising. The wintry location, the candlelit interiors, the brooding and bearded Christian Bale, the impressive cast list. I liked it even more when Harry Melling started chewing the scenery as Edgar Allan Poe, although I understand that some liked it a lot less.

Unfortunately, the rest of the movie doesn't live up to this promise. I watched it to the end, but you might want to bail on Bale et al. before the end, or skip it entirely.

The first half is great. The second half is silly. The whole thing is wonderfully done. It's beautiful, with great performances, some of them by humans.

This movie is wonderfully shot, scored, and costumed. It features one of the best performances I've seen in my recent movie-watching spate.

I refer to Vicky Krieps as Alma, the muse, etc., of Daniel Day Lewis's dress designer. I must see her in other movies: Hanna?

On the other hand, I don't see as much in the work of DDL and Paul Thomas Anderson as many others do. But that's for another post...

My problem with this movie is that it waits until the halfway point, which is over an hour in, to get me really interested. Wondering what's going on, while not caring very much, and being annoyed by one of the main characters (Ben) isn't the same as really interested.
