Tremendous performances, especially from a young Kim Hwan-hee as the daughter of the main character. Some startling images.

I'm not sure that it needs to be two and a half hours long. Hence the three and a half star rating.

As I so often remark, I should see it again, preferably on a big screen.

This movie is wonderfully shot, scored, and costumed. It features one of the best performances I've seen in my recent movie-watching spate.

I refer to Vicky Krieps as Alma, the muse, etc., of Daniel Day Lewis's dress designer. I must see her in other movies: Hanna?

On the other hand, I don't see as much in the work of DDL and Paul Thomas Anderson as many others do. But that's for another post...

My problem with this movie is that it waits until the halfway point, which is over an hour in, to get me really interested. Wondering what's going on, while not caring very much, and being annoyed by one of the main characters (Ben) isn't the same as really interested.

I struggle to find anything to say about MD that hasn't been said many times already. But...

    I am wary of movies:
    - about movie-making
    - that involve dream sequences.
Combining them gives a danger that the movie may be about nothing more than the noodling of the movie-maker.

But this is amazing, and is about so much.
