kenneth lonergan knows how to capture grief (and emotion) so well it's like he reached inside of my brain and processed my feelings for me and then put them in a movie. patrick's irrational yet totally rational breakdown over the freezer renders lonergan a master observer of humans, or at least me, because i know that feeling so well yet it's one that is so difficult to articulate. he is also able to make me feel so much about situations…

this is a comedy, but it just made me very very sad........ the romcom part was extremely cute though (so cute that i wanted them to be together despite the whole cop thing)

(i'm sure i'll enjoy it more on rewatch)

i think the reason why i love the safdies so much is because they treat each subject they capture on film with such tenderness. an uncut gem is an incredibly romantic notion—it's flawed, but there's beauty below the rough surface and it takes work to see it. you have to trust that it is there without seeing all of it naked. that's the way the safdies write their characters—lenny, harley, connie, and now howard. they treat their very flawed characters as heroes if only for two hours forcing us to look, really look, through the loupe at the gem.
