such a fantastic job at building a feeling, getting us inside the heads of our characters. soundtrack was lovely as well, really complemented the sound of the forests that dad and tom were running around in.

made me want to go hiking

it feels like they got about 2/3 of the way through production and then decided to call it quits. the cgi was all over the place, the writing was spotty, the acting was half-assed, and the whole second half jumped around so much in time and space i couldn't tell what was going on.

    midway mad libs:

a (american|japanese) pilot (spots|can't find) a fleet, then does an attack, which (succeeds|misses), and then there's an explosion

Liked the non-linear narrative, I think it really helped contextualise how the past influences the present.

Think I sorta liked the meta-narrative too, where the character is the author and the book is made in the movie, but I guess that's a book thing and not a movie thing.

Maybe one of my favourite Kurosawas?

The part where he's like, "It's not too late, there's still something I can do," while the girls in the background sing "Happy birthday to you," was spectacular. I wanted to jump up n holler.

Lots of interesting camerawork at play here as well: in particular I liked the slide cuts, like Japanese sliding doors between scenes. And all of the closeups! Takashi Shimura is such a stunning actor, don't know how I hadn't realised it until now.
