The pacing issues of the first film have been thrown out the window for this one, as the film creates its own brand of script structure and perfects it simultaneously. While length hindered the first film, the length of The Two Towers is complimentary to the broad list of events and characters. Performances are great, visuals are stunning and the soundtrack is unbelievable. I also love when Karl Urban just pops up in movies for no reason.
While I’ve come around on the general plot and spectacular cast of characters, my big problem with this movie is its inattention to scene length and its disregard for the audience’s time. The extended cut adds an additional 50 minutes to the already 3 hour run time, in what is essentially a light in conflict set up for the other movies. There’s an unbelievably excellent 2 hour and 45 minute movie in here, but that extra length can be painful.
