Carol ★★★★

Todd Haynes' "Carol," a romantic melodrama about two women in mid-century America, is at its best when it is still. Reveling in glances, stolen eye contact, and fleeting touch, Hayne's drama sells, brilliantly, feelingly, the idea of attraction and connection between two kindred spirits. The stillness, the quiet, belies the film's churning plot points and works spellbindingly with the work's period-perfect production design, brushed grain aesthetic, and silently passionate but never too-restrained sense of self. Featuring fine performances by its leads, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, "Carol" is subtly yet completely appealing.
