Going into this, I suspected that it was just going to be Heat for late-teens to young adults that love chugging Monster Energy. My expectations were appropriately met when the first scene is a direct copy of Heat's iconic opener. When I'm right, I'm right.
There's some real dirtbag energy that has a throughline here. Both sides of the law are awful here, and the movie says as much, but it spends way too much time dragging its feet and spelling things out. There isn't the absurd hyper-confidence in themes and messaging here (think: Michael Bay) that I'd ultimately prefer something this outwardly scummy to have, and I certainly don't sense a hint of irony or satire here. So, is this just a movie for insanely caffeinated and evil douchebags? Probably!
I'd have a much easier time not liking this if it weren't so well-made. The action here is incredibly fluid and smooth. The story, as dumb as it and its inhabitants are, is easy enough to get behind, and that makes it a pretty easy watch. It's a totally fine movie, and it's something most people on its wavelength will really enjoy, I just need more of something, anything, to truly latch onto.
