A lesser entry in the Val Lewton canon. There are some hauntingly beautiful moments, surrounded by several unfocused scenes and plot threads (was the whole subplot with the old woman and her daughter really necessary?).
That said, even a lesser Val Lewton effort is a good one. Seeing several of his movies in a theater these last weeks really made me fall in love with his work. His style of fantastical melodrama is like a warm blanket to me. Every time that RKO logo appears, I know I'm in for a nice time.
