I saw this film nearly 24 hours ago and I’m still not sure I “enjoyed” it. It was certainly a great film in my opinion, the cinematography and acting were superb! The story however was quite weak. The first 20 minutes really enthralled me, but once the cast of characters arrives in the Swedish village, it turned into scenes that were only connected by the fact that they are at this midsummer festival. I love movies where people are hilariously petty. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite is an absurdist comedy disguised as a historical drama. The interactions between Anne (Olivia Colman), Abigail (Emma Stone), and Sarah (Rachel Weisz) are all endlessly entertaining. The costume design is some of the best of the year. This is a movie I highly recommend, assuming you are a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos’s previous films. I’ll write a more detailed review after I’ve had time to process the film a bit more.
