Chris’s review published on Letterboxd:
My first rewatch in decades.
When I first saw it I guess I was in my late teens. And I didn’t understand it at all, it was so different from anything I’d seen before. And that kind of scared me.
Now, having seen and read so much about it, and knowing how highly rated it is, I was uncertain how I might feel.
It’s not a film. It’s a cinematic artwork, an installation that, so long as you go with it and don’t try to force it into what you think of as “film”, will absorb you.
The visuals are stunning, the 7-minute Stargate sequence is the most astonishing use of colour I can think of. The soundscape and symphonic score is peerless.
The core sequence with HAL is fabulous, so well-known but still jaw dropping. The editing is flawless.
I could go on. But won’t. Just see it.
I could understand if you don’t like it. But I think you’d be wrong.
