I think there’s great spectacle. The scenes of destruction are loud and aggressive and palpable. Godzilla’s Ginza attack is an expanded version of the monster’s first use of his atomic breath in GMK - and it’s just as startling. Godzilla is the Bomb.

Godzilla Fest 4: Operation Jet Jaguar 2023
I enjoyed this but it truly makes me sad that the incredible effects work on display (miniatures, suits, and how brilliantly they’re shot) will likely never feature in a proper Godzilla film again. The special effects work of Tsuburaya, Nakano, Kawakita and others remains integral to my unending fascination with and attachment to these films, and seeing them trotted out once a year for these shorts is a little disheartening - despite how jaw-droppingly good they are.

Invasion of Astro-Monster 1965
This film gets better with each viewing.
1954 to 1965 is a fascinating era of the Godzilla series because every film is something new. The experimentation and willingness to expand upon what a Godzilla film could be is brilliant. Invasion of Astro-Monster is no different in that sense.
