This is the first time that I’ve properly paid attention to and engaged with this film from beginning to end.
Its best feature is the gaggle of invaders created by Paul Blaisdell. Blaisdell’s saucer men are fabulous, the quintessential alien invader design. Unfortunately, the editing and lighting do not serve them very well. I imagine the quick, split-second shots of the invaders were meant to prompt a “less is more” idea, but it means that Blaisdell’s work doesn’t get the screen time it deserves - not least because the film’s other elements don’t hold up all that well.
As of August 2020, Invasion of the Saucer Men doesn’t have a modern home video release in the U.K. It is genuinely such a shame that so many ‘50s SF and horror pictures have no home video releases (blu-ray or otherwise). AIP’s ‘50s output in particular has been criminally neglected. I know rights issues abound, but these movies need preserving.
Paul Blaisdell’s marvellous monsters often appear in movies like this wherein they’re obscured by shadows or darkness - Voodoo Woman is perhaps the worst offender in this regard. Watching them in 480p or less doesn’t help! Having a nice crisp transfer of something like It Conquered the World or The She-Creature would allow his creations to be seen more clearly - and hopefully appreciated much, much more.
