The Irishman

The Irishman ★★★★★

The key scene in The Irishman (or to use the far superior title, I Heard You Paint Houses) comes very early on, showing Frank's activity in World War Two. This is the essence of the film; while Frank has always pictured himself holding the gun, he has in fact been holding the shovel. Every event in his life has been a pile of dirt swept out of his grave. I feel that the film is only comprehensible in the context of the last 30 minutes, during which the question "what's it all been for?" looms large over the image.
